What is runway?

Runway is the number of months your company can keep operating on the cash it has in the bank today, before that cash runs out. It is one of the first numbers investors, boards and CEOs look at.

How do you calculate it?

The simple version: cash in the bank divided by monthly net burn (expenses minus revenue). For example: $500,000 in the bank and a net burn of $33,000 a month gives you about 15 months.

This calculator also accounts for revenue growth and expense growth over time, because in most companies neither number stands still.

When should you start fundraising?

Fundraising usually takes 6 months, sometimes more. So it is better to raise as soon as you can, not at the last minute – especially when the revenue forecast is uncertain. Raising from a position of room gives you more leverage with investors.
